Legend goes that king Bali boasted of his incredible powers and to shatter his pride, Lord Vishnu took Vaman (human being as dwarf) avatar and asked Bali to grant him three steps of land. Bali, a renowned patron of Brahmins, agreed to fulfill Vishnu’s wish. On this, Lord Vishnu resumed his colossal figure and covered entire heaven and earth in just two steps; for the remaining one step, Bali offered his head for Vishnu to put his third step. Thus, Bali was defeated by Vishnu and this conquest is celebrated on the fifteenth day of darker side (new moon) of Ashwin month.
