Rakhi is a big festival in the city of dreams- Mumbai. It is popularly known as Nariyal Purnima Festival or Coconut Full Moon, especially by the people living near Mumbai's famous beaches. During Rakhi festival, along with the festivities, unique ceremonies are carried out in order to appease Lord Varuna or the Hindu sea of God. On Rakhi day, as a mark of respect to the sea, fishermen decorate their boats with vibrantly colored flags and take it to the seas. They row their boat and sing songs of praise. After worshipping the coconut they immerse it in the sea as an offering to Lord Varuna.
Apart from this, there is a special Rakhi carnival organized. Hindi film stars add glitz and glamour to the event by participating in the carnival. This does not however put the quintessential rituals of rakhi in the backburner, as the most colorful and elaborate rakhis first make it to the stalls in Mumbai. Rakhis are seen adorning the stalls and are later seen beautifying intricately designed rakhi thalis. Rakhi return gifts are customary and brothers spend a great deal of time choosing them.
