In the wake of an era that constantly talks and argues about the equality of the sexes, several steps have been taken to empower women. A day dedicated to women is indeed one of the better things this argument has brought about. Women's day celebration on a National level, is generally observed with celebrities adorning the stage and announcements of awards to women achievers in various fields.

Smaller organizations like the NGOs, clubs and colleges may have similar events but on a smaller scale. The human resource departments at the corporate level often come up with novel ideas to make the day truly special for the female employees. Free medical check-up, useful mementos and cultural events are integral to the celebrations.

Apart from these events which add a unique panache to the festival, several social organizations arrange for commodities to be distributed amongst the underprivileged. Sponsorships for education of a girl child is also an emerging trend in India and it gains special meaning during Women's Day.

Many retail sectors are banking on events like the Women's Day to introduce themes and enhance sales. The automotive sector, jewellery marts and the garment industry, which have witnessed a slump in sales, generally gear up during the month of March; with enticing discounts.

Women's day is indeed an event which is much looked forward to, especially by the women folk. Here's hoping that Women's Day 2009, would be a pleasant one for women across the world. Happy Women's Day.
