Firecrackers on Diwali

The mention of Diwali reminds us of all things nice. Diwali is the harvest festival and a day for thanksgiving. Worship of Goddess Laxmi is pivotal on Diwali and people wake up at 2.00 am to celebrate the festival. They bathe before dawn and offer their respects to the Goddess of wealth.

Besides Diwali mithai, Diwali gifts and the various rituals, there is one aspect of Diwali that we all love and look forward to-the Diwali crackers. Crackers light up the sky, some with a loud noise and few others with an innate effervescence.

The noisy crackers also have a purpose. It is believed that it is burned to let the Gods know that we are rejoicing the victory of good over evil. There is another belief supporting the use of crackers. The fumes emitted from crackers are believed to kill flies and mosquitoes seen in abundance after the rains.

Diwali crackers are much awaited by children, more so because they are wrapped in colored paper and with the great deal of fun attached with the bursting of crackers; they are in a way, envoys of family togetherness and fun galore.

So the next time you fret about the harsh noise remember that Diwali is for letting go of all inhibitions. Although to abide by the environment norms there are eco friendly crackers which are a rage. Reduce the noise and the extra smoke and make sure that the Gods will hear us anyway.
